Donald Trump Davos speech: The speech will be the last from a major world leader
During a meeting with Mrs May, he said: “There's a false rumour out there and I just wanted to correct it, frankly.
"We have great respect for everything you are doing and we love your country, we think it's truly great.
"We are working on transactions in terms of economic development, trade, maybe most importantly military.
"We are very much joined at the hip when it comes to the military. We have the same ideas, the same ideals, and there's nothing that would happen to you that we won't be there to fight for you. You know that."
Donald Trump has also made a surprise apology for retweeting videos posted by far-right group Britain First.
In an interview with Piers Morgan, he said: "I knew nothing about them and I know nothing about them today other than I read a little bit.
"Perhaps it was a big story in Britain, perhaps it was a big story in the UK, but in the United States it wasn't a big story.
"If you are telling me they're horrible people, horrible racist people, I would certainly apologise if you'd like me to do that."
