Carroll hits from outside to stop Garden City

Too many Garden City turnovers and too many Bishop Carroll outside shots led to a 52-22 win for the Golden Eagles in the first round of the Newton Invitational girls’ basketball tournament at Ravenscroft Gym.

Carroll outscored Garden City xx-3 from the outside. The Eagles also took advantage of 18 Buffalo turnovers.

“That just goes to bad rotations and not giving our defense a chance when we turned it over,” Garden City coach Matt Pfeifer said. “We knew they were very capable (of the outside shot), that’s why we wanted to be more patient on offense. We didn’t defend (the transition) well.”

Carroll, 10-1, was led by Hannah Landwehr with 13 points and Allison McFarren with 10.

Garden City, 4-7, was led by Josie Calzonetti with 10.

Both teams struggled with ball handling early. Tied 4-4, Carroll scored 10 straight points. A McFarren putback at the buzzer put Carroll up 18-8.

Garden City was hampered by eight turnovers and missing all five free throws attempted.

Carroll continued the pressure in the second quarter, outscoring the Buffaloes 11-3 to lead 29-11 at the half. Carroll hit 12 of 24 shooting in the first half, while Garden City was five of 18, one of 10 in the second quarter.

Carroll started to light it up from the outside in the third quarter, making a 14-3 run. The Eagles hit five of their first six shots in the period. Carroll dumped its bench in the last two minutes of the quarter. An Erin Walden jumper at the buzzer put Carroll up 45-18.

Carroll scored the first four points of the fourth quarter to kick in the running clock.

Garden City plays in the consolation semifinals at 4:45 p.m. Friday. Bishop Carroll plays in the semifinals at 8:15 p.m.

“We need to come out more relaxed,” Pfeifer said. “We need to be a lot more focused.”
