Hockey Cup: Gallery, pool, road works to end by July

Infrastructure and other facility works for the Men's Hockey World Cup 2018, scheduled to be held at the Kalinga Stadium here from November 28 to December 16, are going on in full swing now.

It was revealed at the 2nd executive meeting of the Hockey World Cup held under chairmanship of AP Padhi on Thursday. Sports and Youth Affairs Secretary Vishal Dev presented updates.

The Hockey World Cup would be of very high quality compared to other international athletics events and Asian Athletic Championship held at Kalinga Stadium last year.

Briefing media, Chief Secretary, A.P. Padhi said the gallery seating capacity at the main hockey stadium would be enhanced to 16,000 against the existing strength of 8,000. Importance is being given to world-class lightening, best infrastructure and a stay worth remembering for the guests. He said 5,000 to 7,000 foreign guests are expected to stay in the city during the World Cup.

It was targeted to complete gallery construction, swimming pool renovation and road widening works by July.

Dev said infrastructure work would be completed within stipulated time and new turf would spread on the ground. The tournament even would be displayed though LED TVs at all district headquarters, he said.

Hockey India CEO Elena Norman said that everything is on track. Ticket sale will begin within one-two months.

It may be noted that the Men’s Hockey World Cup was held in India twice earlier, first in Mumbai in 1982 and then in Delhi in 2010. Bhubaneswar would host the prestigious event for the third time in the country. As many as 16 best world teams would participate in the grant event.

Among others, DG of Police Dr RP Sharma, Finance Principal Secretary Tuhinkant Pande, GA Principal Secretary Ashok Kumar Meena, Tourism Department Principal Secretary Dr Mona Sharma, Idco CMD Sanjay Singh, Culture Department Secretary Manoj Kumar Panigrahi, BMC Commissioner Krisan Kumar and Works Secretary Nalinikant Pradhan were present.
