Student Killing: Key suspect killed in 'gunfight'

An alleged accused in a case filed over the murder of a college student was killed in a "gunfight" with police in Bolashpur area of Mymensingh town early yesterday.

The dead is Nayeem Mia, son of Nazir Uddin of Krishtapur area of the town. The body was sent to Mymensingh Medical College morgue for autopsy.

Khandaker Shaker Ahmed, officer-in-charge of Kotwali Police Station, said police arrested Saddam Hossain, 24, and Pavel, 25, in Mymensingh town in connection with the killing of Ibrahim Khalil on Friday.

Ibrahim, a second-year student of Islamic History and Culture department of Government Ananda Mohan College, was stabbed to death in town's Bolashpur area by muggers on the night of January 18.

During interrogation, Saddam and Pavel confessed that Nayeem, 22, and Insan, 20, of Mymensingh town's Krishtapur area were involved in the killing and Nayeem was the "mastermind".

Police arrested Insan on Tuesday night and Nayeem early yesterday.

Acting on information received from Nayeem, a police team raided Bolashpur area around 3:30am yesterday to arrest his accomplices. They took Nayeem along with them. On sensing police presence, Nayeem's cohorts started hurling cocktails and fired several bullets on the police team, the OC claimed.

In retaliation, police also fired some 20 bullets. Nayeem was caught in the line of fire and he sustained bullet wounds in his abdomen when he attempted to run away from police custody, the OC said.

He was rushed to MMCH immediately where the doctors declared him dead.

Police recovered two knives from the spot and arrested one identified as Korshed Koshu, 25, an alleged accomplice of Nayeem. Korshed was being interrogated at the police station at the time this report was filed.

Two policemen -- sub-inspector Mahbub and Constable Rashedul Islam -- were injured during the incident. They were given first aid.
