Patty Mills, Diamon Simpson and Omar Samhan, make room at the table for Emmett Naar, Calvin Hermanson and Jock Landale.
The guard-forward-center combination of Mills-Simpson-Samhan helped set the St. Mary’s record for consecutive wins, 15, that the Naar-Hermanson-Landale crew tied Thursday night with a 75-62 victory over BYU at steamy McKeon Pavilion.
Landale and Naar shared the spotlight Thursday evening as the Gaels tied the mark set by the 2008-09 team. Landale put together his 14th double-double of the season with 32 and 14 rebounds. He went 13-for-19 from the floor and 5-for-5 at the line. It’s the sixth time this season the 6-foot-11 senior has scored at least 30.
Naar, whose passing led to quite a few of Landale’s buckets, also had a double-double with 13 points and 12 assists.
The Gaels (20-2, 9-0 WCC) also extended their home winning streak to 14 games.
BYU (17-5, 6-3) scored the first five points of the second half to go up 35-33.
The Gaels were still down two before Jordan Ford nailed a three off an assist from Hermanson. That began an 8-0 run.
Naar converted a drive and then found Tanner Krebs for a trey to give the Gaels a 45-39 edge with just less than 15 minutes remaining.
Despite Landale scoring on his array of hooks, up-and-under moves and dunks, the Cougars hung with St. Mary’s.
With just more than seven minutes left, the Gaels were in front by five. With the shot clock about to expire, Naar fed Landale — but not on his normal spot on the block. No, Landale was beyond the arc — and he drained the three-pointer, his first this season and the sixth of his career.
The Gaels led 59-51.
The Gaels put together a 13-2 run midway through the first half. Naar began that stretch with a three-pointer and a baseline floater.
Soon thereafter, he appeared to have injured his leg and he came off the court for a few minutes.
The Gaels didn’t seem to miss a beat. When Ford drove the lane and dropped home a layup, St. Mary’s was up 31-21. That capped the 13-2 spurt.
At no point in either of the Gaels’ wins at Gonzaga and Pacific last week did any team lead by double digits.
St. Mary’s 10-point advantage over the Cougars didn’t last long. Though Naar re-entered the game, BYU scored nine of the final 11 points of the half, which ended with the Gaels on top 33-30.
Landale led all scorers with 12 points at the break, but he scored only two points over the final 11½ minutes of the half. He also had a game-high seven boards in the opening half.
Briefly: Landale (1,400) moved into ninth place on the school’s career scoring list, surpassing Stephen Holt (1,370), Steve Gray (1,390) and Eric Schraeder (1,396). … St. Mary’s began Thursday with an RPI of 36. BYU’s was 73. … Not much happening at the line in the first half. Jahshire Hardnett made BYU’s only two free-throw tries. Cullen Neal hit the only foul shot the Gaels attempted.
