FRONTENAC — The Frontenac High School wrestling team defended its title of Cannonball Clash champs with a 32-27 win over Fort Scott on Thursday to keep the travelling trophy safe at home.

“We had some kids step up and get big wins,” FHS head coach Keith Aikin said. “We also had some kids who need to learn some more and finish matches strong. Overall, we did a really good job. I really enjoy the friendly rivalry between us and Fort Scott that the travelling trophy has created.”

After dropping the first three matches of the night, Riley McDaniel put Frontenac on the board with a win in the 132-pound weight class, defeating Silas Taylor by technical fall 17-1.

Frontenac’s Storm Niegsch (138) followed it up with a win by fall over Daevin Caldwell.

Jeremiah Mellnick (145) earned a 10-9 decision over Fort Scott’s Jacob Zubieta, before Brendan Ishimura picked up a win by fall over Jon Daniels to make it four wins in a row for the Riaders

Kaleb Kroenke (170) and Nathan Kaufman (220) rounded out the day for FHS, defeating Kaden Primm and Grayson Quick respectively by fall.

UP NEXT

The Raiders will compete in the SEK Invitational in Chanute at 9 a.m. on Saturday.
