In order to boost traffic regulation in the city, police have appointed as many as 75 students out of 160 applicants who would be assisting the traffic personnel.
The student brigade includes 24 girls as well. Baleswar is the fifth district in deploying students in traffic duty after Bhubaneswar, Cuttack, Brahmapur and Rourkela.
All the selected students went through test and interview that would be deployed for three hours a day. They would be paid a basic remuneration of Rs 100 on daily basis.
These students were further provided with 10-day training on road safety, traffic rules, regulation and management system ahead of deployment. Additionally, they have to do at least 15 days duty in a month, said officials.
Inspector General (Eastern Range) of police Binaytosh Mishra formally launched the student brigade where he encouraged the students to take up the responsibility with discipline, punctuality and respect for law.
The State Transport department would bear the cost of uniform set and remuneration paid to the students. Currently, the traffic system is managed by 27 constables and 25 home guards. This path breaking step of involving students in traffic management would definitely go a long way in improving the traffic safety in the city, where these students would be deployed in major squares for regulating vehicles and congestion, said Traffic police station IIC Paresh Rout.
