Matar’s free-kick lifts Al Wahda over Al Nasr

Abu Dhabi: Al Wahda defeated Al Nasr 1-0 in an Arabian Gulf League match at the Zayed Sport City Stadium on Wednesday.

The hosts swiftly moved through the gears and opened the scoring in the 19th minute when Ismael Matar was tackled outside the 18-yard-box. Al Wahda captain curled the free-kick in off the post to put his side in front.

Three minutes later, Al Wahda were handed a golden opportunity to double their lead when Mourad Batna was brought down by Joan Oumari inside the penalty area. Balazs Dzsudzsak’s powerful shot from the spot bounced off the crossbar, keeping the score at 1-0.

PLC Honours Matar

The Pro League Committee (PLC) honoured Al Wahda captain Ismael Matar for winning the Year of Zayed Arabian Gulf Super Cup Fans Star award. Matar received the shield ahead of kick-off of the match.

Matar earned the largest share of the votes on the PLC polls through its social media channels, which drew large engagement from fans. The PLC had launched the vote-based award with the start of the Al Wahda vs Al Jazira match in the Year of Zayed Arabian Gulf Super Cup, extending the vote for 24 hours to allow as many fans to participate in choosing the their Star of the match.

Meanwhile, Dibba came from behind to earn a late 2-2 draw against reigning champions Al Jazira on Wednesday.

Both sides struck the woodwork in the first 45 minutes, but there were no goals at the break.

New signing Rodolfo da Silva nearly got his second goal in as many games when he beat Al Jazira goalkeeper Ali Khaseif with a towering header, but the Brazilian’s attempt was denied by the post in the 19th minute.
