AUBURN — Auburn’s 2018 football recruiting class is almost locked down following another verbal pledge Wednesday evening.
After an in-home visit from Auburn head coach Gus Malzahn and defensive coordinator Kevin Steele, three-star defensive back Roger McCreary gave his promise to sign with Auburn on Feb. 7.
“I love the coaching staff and how they explained how they needed me,” McCreary said after his official visit on Jan. 14. “They talked about fundamentals and strategy and stuff, so I really love everything they explained to me.”
Following a visit with the five Auburn players participating in the Senior Bowl, Malzahn and Steele used the trip as a recruiting visit to see McCreary to persuade him to committing to Auburn’s 2018 class that is ranked No. 7 in the nation by Rivals.com.
McCreary, who was at one time verbally committed to South Alabama, is a 6-foot and 190-pound prospect from Williamson High in Mobile who will likely be worked at cornerback alongside four-star early signee Christian Tutt.
McCreary ran for 802 yards and eight touchdowns, caught 62 passes for 702 yards and seven scores and also completed 50 passes for more than 600 yards and six touchdowns while playing wide receiver, running back and quarterback at Williamson. On defense, McCreary had eight interceptions.
McCreary’s commitment likely doesn’t leave much room for Montgomery native Cam Taylor. The Park Crossing High prospect had high hopes his recruitment can end in a similar way to Daniel Thomas, a fellow native of Montgomery, despite leaving the Auburn campus nearly two weeks ago without a scholarship offer.
