Tesla has launched a new online trip planning tool which could help alleviate range anxiety for potential EV buyers.

The new tool allows drivers to map out a road trip in a Tesla car, which incorporate its Supercharger network.

The EV maker said that the purpose of this trip planning tool is to educate prospective Tesla customers about where you can travel in one of the cars.

It is a simplified version of the in-car navigation system and has been introduced to show what a road trip in Tesla would look like.

Drivers using the tool input their location and destination and the software generates a route which incorporates stops at one of the manufacturer’s  rapid Supercharger network or a lower-power Destination Charger network.

When a trip is inputed it will reveal where you need to stop and for how long to ensure the car has enough charge to make it to the destination.

Currently it is only available for the new range of Model S and Model X cars, but offers a better understanding of what a road trip in an EV will look like.

An example route Express.co.uk tried was by inputting a journey form Shoreditch London to Edinburgh in the Model S 100D.

The tool plots the route and where the driver has to stop and for how long

According to the mapping tool during the 408 miles trip, which will take 8 hours and 21 minutes to complete, the driver would have to stop once in Charnock Richard, UK at a Supercharger for 45 minutes to get enough charge to complete the trip.

On a trip of this length drivers would likely want to stop for at least that length of time for food or a break, revealing the capability of these EVs.

Even in the lower range 75D it would take nine hours and would require two stops in Grantham for 55 minutes and Washington for 30 minutes.

The tool reveals the average fuel saving estimate a driver can expect to make by using a Tesla EV.
