Lamont, who battled Sen. Joseph R. McCarthy and the CIA in his lifelong fight for civil liberties, was a Columbia University professor who published more than 20 books, including "Humanism as a Philosophy," in 1949.

Corliss Lamont died at age 93 in 1995.

According to his obituary, published in the New York Times, Corliss won a 1965 suit  against the U.S. Postmaster General for "violating his First Amendment rights by opening and withholding his mail, including propaganda from Peking. The Supreme Court held a 1961 anti-propaganda mail law to be unconstitutional."

His father, Thomas Lamont, was an early partner and later chairman of J.P. Morgan.

Lamont's family donated their weekend retreat in Palisades, known as "Torrey Cliff" to Columbia University and it is now the site of the Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory.

Corliss Lamont's own weekend retreat in Ossining, reportedly the site of fundraising rallys, including one in which Pete Seeger performed, is on just over 19 acres of woods, meadows and streams, tucked off Hawkes Avenue in Ossining.

Included is a stately stone mansion with seven bedrooms and five bathrooms. There are two fireplaces, an impressive library with floor-to-ceiling bookshelves filled with volumes. The kitchen is large but needs updating.

The 7,107-square-foot home was built in 1910 and it seems not much has changed, except for the immediate neighborhood, now filled with townhouse developments and new luxury construction. The property is available for subdivision, according to the listing, but a potential owner looking for privacy could do a major upgrade here.

The property comes with two natural ponds. There is also a greenhouse, horse stable, guest cottage with three bedrooms, and a tennis court.
