Adrian High School to implement pilot physical ed program
ADRIAN — the Adrian Public Schools Board of Education on Monday approved proposed pilot physical education and health education programs for high school students.
The programs put into effect were authorized by the board following several weeks of discussion between district staff and administrators, according to the recommendation paperwork at Monday’s meeting.
On Dec. 14, high school physical education teachers Michael Graham and Tanya Smith met with principal Ron Jacobs, assistant principal John Roberts, director of curriculum and instruction Derrick Richards and Superintendent Bob Behnke to discuss current high school physical education offerings. After reviewing current offerings, the group agreed changes to the current course offerings were necessary.
In redesigning the physical education and health course offerings the group had three goals:
Increase the number of days students have health, which will be achieved by splitting from the introductory physical education course. Create defined pathways and prerequisites for courses. The foundations of physical education will be the foundation of the strength and conditioning courses that have direct relation to the athletic programs. Create new courses and make changes to current courses to meet students’ needs and interests. Courses such as lifetime activities, personal fitness, aquatics, basic life support and first aid, and youth coaching and officiating were added. The program will go into effect at the beginning of the 2018-19 school year.
