ASHWAUBENON – The Ashwaubenon boys hockey team is on pace for its first winning season in four years, and Tyler Roethlisberger has been a part of the rebuild from the start.
The Jaguars are tied with Green Bay Notre Dame for first in the Fox River Classic Conference at 10 points with a record of 14-5 and 5-1 in conference play. Fourteen wins is Ashwaubenon's highest total since the 2013-14 season. Ashwaubenon is on an eight-game win streak as it heads into the FRCC tournament this weekend.
Entering his fourth season on the varsity roster, Roethlisberger has seen the turnaround of the program from three wins his freshman season to having a chance to win a conference championship his senior season.
After recording 19 points as junior, Roethlisberger leads the FRCC in points with 37, tallying 14 goals and 23 assists.
A three-sport athlete at Ashwaubenon, Roethlisberger was named honorable mention all-FRCC for boys soccer last fall and is a member of the boys golf team in spring.
Roethlisberger answered questions with USA TODAY NETWORK-Wisconsin.
The team is having a very successful year so far, what’s that been like?
It’s been a great experience. I have been on varsity all four years, so the first year we started off with three wins and that was tough. Sophomore year I think we had five or six, junior year we had 10 and now we are at 14, so it’s been a steady progress up.
How’s it been to see that process from your freshman season to now being a contender in the FRCC?
It’s a good accomplishment going from last place from my freshman year to second place my senior year. It’s a big jump, but we worked for it and we’ve come a long way. I think this season we have a lot more talent than we’ve had the last few years. We are working in practice and it’s not just screw-around time. In past years, we had a lot more kids joke around, but this year it’s more serious.
What’s it been like to have Coach Golden as your coach for all four years?
It’s been super nice. I have been able to grow a bond with Coach. I can give him suggestions and he listens to them sometimes. We’ve bonded and become closer to where he’s the coach, but I can turn to him if I need to.
Being named a captain by the coaches, what does that mean to you?
It’s a great accomplishment that Coach gave it to me and all the teammates respected me that I’ve been honored with that. But, it also sets a standard for myself that I have to be giving 110 percent all the time as a good leader and show all the underclassmen how to do everything properly.
Was the overtime win against Bay Port earlier this season a turning point for the team?
Yeah, I think that was the first game that we really played together as a team. We came out strong and that was our first game that we knew we could do something this season.
After losing to Notre Dame, the team has won eight straight. What changed from that game?
I think we rebuilt. It’s hard to come off a tough loss, we had been playing well leading up to it, but that game was a reality check to how to play a team that is ranked high. So now we have been working towards that goal and that has been helping us a lot.
Has winning conference been a goal since the beginning?
At the beginning of the year, we went to a team-building exercise and Coach had us put up goals for our season, and one of our goals was to win conference. We’ve put ourselves in a position for that and now we just have to execute.
What do your friends/teammates call you?
Boston College. During our summer skates, I drew up a drill that was a Boston College drill, and that nickname stuck.
What is your most memorable sports achievement?
Last year when our soccer team made it sectional semifinals, which was the farthest we’ve ever gone in like six or seven years.
What is your most embarrassing sports memory?
Freshman year in hockey, in the first shift of our first scrimmage against Bay Port, I got absolutely destroyed in the corner.
What is your sports superstition or ritual?
Eat Panera three hours before a game, dress the whole right side of my body first and in between every period, I eat a fruit snack.
Which teammate will you miss the most and why?
I’ll miss everybody since I’m going to college in Colorado.
Who is your celebrity crush?
Selena Gomez.
What is your dream vacation?
Ireland.
What is your dream career?
CFO of a golf company.
