The Open Fiber wholesale-only venture of Italian utility giant Enel and state lender CDP has begun building a fibre-optic network in the city of Alessandria in the northern Piedmont region in a total investment of around EUR 12 million. The company said it plans to bring FTTH services at speeds of up to 1Gbps to a total of 34,000 households throughout the city by January 2019. It plans to eventually connect 900,000 households in Piedmont in a total investment of EUR 284 million.

In September Open Fiber revealed that it had already connected 2 million homes to its fibre-optic network and is targeting a total of 19 million households and businesses by 2022 in a total investment of some EUR 6.5 billion.
