Hande says the late leader wanted him to keep it

H.V. Hande, who was the Health Minister during the AIADMK government under M.G. Ramachandran, on Wednesday handed over the latter’s medical file from 1984 to Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami at the Secretariat.

The file has about 30 sheets relating to the health and medical opinion of various doctors from the then Madras and Bombay cities when MGR was hospitalised in Apollo Hospitals here during October and November 1984.

Speaking to The Hindu, Mr. Hande said the former CM was hospitalised between October and November in 1984 at Apollo Hospitals and was later taken to Downstate Medical Center at Brooklyn in the U.S. “After the treatment and after we returned to [the then] Madras, the doctors in the U.S. gave the file to me,” Mr. Hande recalled.

When asked why the file was not returned to MGR, Mr. Hande said when he had approached MGR with the file, the former CM had said the file would be safe with him. “But, he died later. Since the AIADMK government under Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami has been celebrating the birth anniversary, I thought it would be appropriate to hand over the file to the government,” Mr. Hande said.
