NEW PORT RICHEY — Three area girls weightlifters captured titles at the Class 1A-Region 7 Meet last week at River Ridge High School.
Lemon Bay High’s Macayla Marinola, Port Charlotte’s Kaelyn Griffiths and Booker’s Christian McKay finished first in their respective weight classes and automatically advanced to the Class 1A state meet.
McKay turned in the most impressive performance in the 183-pound weight class. The senior benched 230 pounds and lifted 185 in the clean and jerk for a 415 total, 100 pounds more than her closest competitor.
Marinola, also a senior, captured the 139-pound weight class with a 315 total (150 in the bench and 165 in the clean and jerk) to win by 35 pounds.
A senior, Griffiths also had a 315 total (150-165) and narrowly won the 154-pound weight class by five pounds.
The Florida High School Athletic Association announced the at-large bids Wednesday.
Ten others lifters from the area received at-large bids in 1A.
From Lemon Bay: Sara Reid, Hannah Kane, Leanna Kelly and Kennedy Reigle. From Bayshore: Nicole Citera-Juarez and Timora Dinks. From Port Charlotte: Emma Pritchett, Jasmine Fann and Sariah Dempaire-Salomon.
In Class 2A, 14 area lifters received at-large bids, including five from North Port and Charlotte.
From the Bobcats: Kaitlin Lacey, Bri Sepilvera, Zoey Daniels, Javiana Quiles and Kayle Truran. From the Tarpons: Madison Shepard, Shaneil Williams, Ericka Lane, Brisilda Bejte and Lauren Bell. Also advancing were Sarasota’s Lindsey Riggiero and Madison Hannon, Manatee’s Tessa Marquette and Braden River’s Fayth Walker.
The 1A state meet is on Feb. 2 and the 2A state meet on Feb. 3 at Arnold High School in Panama City Beach.
