Hey big spenders: Tourists pour $9B into city, Jan. 24

It’s no secret to these Americans why there has been a big increase in tourism to Toronto in recent years.

The area has great attractions, theatre, cuisine, mass transit and great people. It’s like a world tour in one city and diversity makes it one of the world’s great destinations.

We’ll be two of those 20,000-plus Rotarians coming in late June. Our fellow members who may be apprehensive about, or disgusted with, American policy and admittance procedures at the moment appreciate the warm welcome Canada affords.

Following our convention, we’ll spend Canada Day weekend in Niagara-on-the-Lake. A great holiday in a civilized country that welcomes so many will always be in demand. Look for more of us in the years to come.

Here are my reasons why tourists are flocking to Toronto.

The varieties and quality of Chinese cuisine are comparable to those in China. The cost of the meals are reasonable and even lower than other big cities in North America.

More people like us are retired. We have time to show our visitors around. Some of us who have not downsized have extra rooms for our guests since our children have moved out.

Next year, we are celebrating our 55th high school anniversary/reunion and Toronto is our first choice to hold the event.
