Novelist Shawkat Ali passes away

Noted novelist Shawkat Ali passed away at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) in Dhaka on Thursday morning.

 

Shawkat Ali's son Dr. Arif Shawkat Pallab said that his father breathed his last around 8:15am at the hospital where he was undergoing treatment. He was 82.

 

The prominent writer was admitted to Labaid Hospital on January 4. Later, he was shifted to the intensive care unit (ICU) following deterioration of his condition and put on life support.

 

And after that he was shifted to the BSMMU.


Shawkat Ali's first novel was ‘Pingal Akash’ and his most popular novel was ‘Prodoshe Prakritojon’.

Some notable works ‘Dakshinayaner Din’ (The Days of Southward Way, 1985), ‘Kulyaai Kalasrot’ (Time the Flow of in a Bird’s Nest, 1986), ‘Purbaratri Purbadin’ (The Night Before, the Day Before, 1986).

The eminent writer received various awards for his outstanding contribution in Bengali literature including Bangla Academy Literary Award (1968), Humayun Kabir Memorial Award, Lekhak Shibir Medal (1978), Ajit Guha Literary Prize (1982), Philips Literary Award (1986 and 1989), Ekushe Padak (1990).

Shawkat Ali was born in Dinajpur district on February 12, 1936.
