MYSTERY BEAST: A man was attacked in his home by an unknown animal in Leicester

The man in his 80s – whose family have asked to remain anonymous – was asleep at his home when he was attacked in Thurnby Lodge, Leicester.

He suffered deep gashes and heavy bruising to his arms and legs as he woke to find he was mauled by a mystery beast.

Family believe the unidentified animal managed to sneak into the pensioner’s home through an open window in the dead of night.

Authorities are now urging people to keep their windows shut at the night until the creature is identified.

Police have also been contacted amid fears of a dangerous animal on the loose.

“It’s not good to know that there is something out there that can do this kind of thing.”

Pictures released by the family show deep cuts to the man’s hands and wrists.

Bruising is also visible on his arms which are covered in blood from the attack.

He was attacked in the early hours of Wednesday morning at his bungalow.

Cllr Teresa Aldred, who represents the area and knows the family, is urging people, particularly the elderly, to keep their windows shut at night.

People have suggested on social media that the creature could be a dog, panther or even a raccoon.

However Sergeant Rob Merrall, of the Humberstone area’s beat team, said they believe the attacked was carried out by some kind of feral cat.

Back in 2016, police in Manchester issued a panther warning after a spate of sightings – urging people to lock their doors and windows.

Cllr Aldred said: “It’s not good to know that there is something out there that can do this kind of thing.

“There are a lot of bungalows in this area and a lot of elderly people.

"That’s why I’m saying to people they should keep their windows shut."

The man also has cats, so it's possible a feral feline entered the man’s home looking for a mate.

Cllr Aldred added: “People are worried and saying, ‘What would have happened if it had been a child?’.

“There’s no doubt it came through his window into his bedroom and the injuries are awful.”

Last week, panic hit Britain when a wolf escaped an animal sanctuary – only to be caught a few hours later.
