Lindsay Czarniak is returning to the local TV station where her career took off. For one week, anyway.

Czarniak, who spent the past six years at ESPN, left her job in Bristol after her contract expired last summer to pursue other passions and spend more time with her family. When NBC Washington (Channel 4), Czarniak’s home for six years before she left for ESPN, recently inquired with the Centreville and JMU graduate about contributing to the station’s Super Bowl coverage next week, she jumped at the chance.

“I’m so pumped to do it,” Czarniak said Wednesday during an interview with the Sports Junkies on 106.7 The Fan. “… I’m not working right now for ESPN or any other entity that would keep me from doing that, so, when they said would you want to do this, I knew immediately that it was something I wanted to do. We had to figure out some details, but it’s great.”

Czarniak will report from U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis, site of Super Bowl LII, beginning Monday on WRC’s 5, 6 and 11 p.m. newscasts. She will contribute to the station’s one-hour Super Bowl special next Saturday and provide coverage after the game.

Czarniak, who was hired as sports reporter and weekend sports anchor in 2005 by the late George Michael, said there are no plans to continue contributing to NBC Washington after the Super Bowl. Carol Maloney left her role as a sports anchor at the station after six years in December.

“Of course, you never say never,” said Czarniak, who in October expressed an interest in getting back into broadcasting and didn’t rule out a return to ESPN. “Who knows? This is how I’m treating it, it’s just really an opportunity to come back and do what we did when I was working for WRC before. We covered several Super Bowls together. For me, doing it with George for several years, that was such a dream, and the way that they covered the Super Bowl, it was just so eye-opening, and such a learning experience.”

Czarniak teased interviews she conducted with former Redskins Coach Joe Gibbs and Hall of Fame hopeful Joe Jacoby, who almost had Czarniak in tears while talking about his career in Washington.

“He’s definitely still working just as hard, or close as just to hard, as he did with the Redskins,” Czarniak said of Gibbs, whose racing team is busy preparing for the Daytona 500. “It was really cool. He told us some funny stories that I did not know about Super Bowl XXVI. He talked a little about his take right now on the state of the team.”

As for the Super Bowl matchup between the Eagles and Patriots, Czarniak doesn’t expect a blowout.

“I think it will be a competitive game,” she said. “It is always hard for me to envision Tom Brady walking off the field not being a winner, and that’s what I said about that conference championship game.”
