UPDATE 11:50 p.m.: A manhunt is underway for two suspects after an Adams County sheriff's deputy was killed while responding to a call of an assault-in-progress on the southern edge of Thornton Wednesday night.

The Adams County Sheriff's Office says that the suspect fled after deputies arrived on the 8700 block of Dawson Street just before 7 p.m. Deputies then began searching for the suspect, and after finding either the suspect or suspects, they fled again.

At the time of this writing, one suspect is in custody while law enforcement searches for two more based on witness testimony.

The Adams County Sheriff's Office says that the suspects are dressed in all back and either dark-skinned Hispanic men or light-skinned African American men.

UPDATE 10:35 p.m.: One man is in custody after an incident late Wednesday night in Thornton, according to 9News.

UPDATE 10 p.m.: Sources confirmed to 9Wants to Know that an Adams County deputy is dead after an incident late Wednesday night in Thornton. The sheriff's office says the suspect is still at large.

Original: The Adams County Sheriff’s Office tweeted Wednesday night that an officer was “down” and that investigators had set a large perimeter to search for the suspect, who remains at-large. 

The incident happened in a residential area just east of Interstate 25 and about 8 miles north of downtown Denver.

The sheriff’s office described the situation in another tweet as a “large dangerous scene with active searches in progress.”
