In June 1993, Pope John Paul II placed the pallium around the shoulders of Archbishop Buechlein. The pallium is a circular band of white wool that the pope places on the shoulders of each archbishop appointed during the past year.

During his time as bishop of Memphis from 1987 to 1992, Buechlein talked with reporters while he met with Mother Teresa of Calcutta.
