A week after H&M was criticized for what some people considered a racist advertisement, the clothing retailer announced it is coming to The Streets at Southpoint in Durham.
The store is expected to open this summer in a space formerly occupied by Gap, H&M announced in a news release Thursday.
“H&M has experienced a warm welcome from customers and fans in North Carolina and is happy to continue to expand its store and employee count in the state,” the company said.
The company came under fire last week after an advertisement on its website featured an African-American boy wearing a green sweatshirt with the words “Coolest Monkey In The Jungle.” The ad became controversial some people lashed out at H&M through social media. Some peole considered the ad a racial slur.
American rapper G-Eazy canceled a partnership with the retailer, and pop star The Weeknd, who had worked with H&M on its 2017 Spring Icons Collection and modeled some of its apparel, also cut ties. NBA star LeBron James and rapper Diddy also spoke out against the ad.
H&M removed the advertisement and pledged to “look into our internal routines to avoid such situations in the future.” It also said Annie Wu, the company’s global manager for employee relations, would become the new global leader for diversity and inclusiveness.
The new store in Southpoint will carry clothing for men, women and teens, along with the H&M Kids collection for newborns to 14-year-olds.
The company has 521 locations across the country and approximately 16,000 U.S. employees.
