A sheriff's deputy in Adams County, Colo., was fatally shot while responding to an assault case Wednesday night and police are still searching for two of the three suspects.
Heath Gumm, 32, had been one of the deputies responding to the call near East 88th Avenue and Dawson Street when they spotted a man who matched the description of the suspect named in the initial 911 call. The suspect ran behind a home and as deputies caught up, then pulled out a handgun and shot at law enforcement, the Adams County Sheriff's Department said in a statement early Thursday.
The suspect shot Gumm in the chest then ran off. Gumm was taken to the Denver Health medical center, but was later pronounced dead.

Officers apprehended the suspected shooter, but have not identified him. Two other suspects have not been located and were described by the sheriff's office as "light skinned black males or dark skin Hispanic males dressed in all black clothing."

The deputy had been with the sheriff's office since 2013 and is survived by his wife and family.
Gov. John Hickenlooper, R-Col., ordered all flags lowered to half-mast Thursday as the state mourned Gumm's death.
"Tonight we watched as a community was on edge and a sheriff’s deputy was shot while responding to a call in Adams County. We are deeply saddened to learn that the deputy has died from injuries sustained in the shooting. Our thoughts and prayers are with the Adams County Sheriff’s Office and the family and friends of the deputy killed," Hickenlooper said in a statement late Wednesday. "The investigation is ongoing and authorities continue to work to restore calm to the area."
This is the second local fatal shooting of a deputy in the line of duty this month.
A Douglas County sheriff's deputy, Zackari Parrish, was killed and six other people were wounded during a shootout with SWAT officers in late December.
