The Giants' special teams are all set for a much-needed makeover.
Thomas McGaughey has been hired as special teams coordinator under first-year head coach Pat Shurmur, a source told NJ Advance Media.
It's not a surprise that McGaughey is the first assistant to become a done deal because his was the first name to leak out as a possibility even before Shurmur's hire was official.
Under NFL rules, the Giants had to wait to announce Shurmur (and his staff) until after the Vikings' season ended and his responsibilities as offensive coordinator were complete.

McGaughey was the Giants assistant special teams coordinator from 2007-10 under Tom Quinn. Now, after stops running his own special teams units at LSU and in the NFL with the Jets, 49ers and Panthers, he is returning as Quinn's successor.
The 44-year-old McGaughey and Giants general manager Dave Gettleman were together during each newcomer's first stint in East Rutherford and then again with the Panthers when Gettleman headed that front office in 2016.
Quinn was Giants special teams coordinator for the last 11 seasons, under Tom Coughlin, successor Ben McAdoo and interim head coach Steve Spagnuolo at the end of the 2017 season.
Veteran reporter Rick Gosselin devised a formula that ranks teams in 22 kicking categories and spits out a final total score. The Giants ranked a distant last in the NFL in 2017 after finishing 17th in 2016 and second in 2015, while the Panthers ranked No. 10 in 2017.
By further comparison, in 2016, the Panthers led the NFL and tied the team record with three blocked field goals. Opposing kick returners averaged a league-worst 18.1 yards per return and the Panthers were No. 5 opponents' average drive start was the 23.7-yard line.
McGaughey turned down a special teams coordinator job because of his confidence level in joining the Giants, according to The Sporting News.
A former Giants special teams star, Chase Blackburn, replaced McGaughey as special teams coordinator for the Panthers earlier this month.
Giants punter Brad Wing, who is coming off a disappointing season, played for McGaughey at LSU.
Shurmur's staff is rapidly falling into place, as he is expected to hire former Cardinals defensive coordinator James Bettcher and former Broncos wide receivers coach Tyke Tolbert for those same positions.
