Mendon, White Pigeon win pair of matches
The Sturgis wrestling team earned a pair of Wolverine Conference victories on Wednesday night in Three Rivers.
Sturgis beat Plainwell in a close match 36-25 and ran away with a 66-6 win over Vicksburg.
“These two wins tonight put Sturgis in second place at the end of the regular dual meet season and will look to move up in the conference standings on Feb. 3 at the conference tournament in Edwardsburg,” coach Dave Yunker said.
In the match with Plainwell, Sturgis earned two wins by pinfall from Tony Fries and Koehl Meek. Nik Yunker won his match by major decision.
Also earning a win was Zack Colgan, Mattie Meek, Kenny Garcia, Trey Lovelace and Trey Fuller.
The only match Vicksburg won against Sturgis was by void at 140 pounds.
Earning six points each for Sturgis on the mats were Mattie Meek, Troy Fries, Garcia, Cody Barton, Lovelace, Koehl Meek, Yunker, Ethan Ruckert, Fuller, Colgan and Chuy Hernandez.
Gage Bail won his match by decision.
The Trojans return to action this Saturday in an individual tournament at Portage Central.
Three Rivers beat Vicksburg 60-15 but dropped a match to Plainwell 40-36.
Mendon sweeps
The Mendon wrestling team won a pair of SW10 matches on Wednesday, beating Decatur 63-3 and Eau Claire 72-12.
Mendon, ranked No. 3 in the state by Michigan Grappler in Division 4, is now 23-1 on the season.
“As a team we did our job tonight,” coach Caleb Stephenson said. “We were playing with weights a bit, trying to give guys a break from the grind of making weight. But we wrestled pretty well.”
In the match against Eau Claire, the Fighting Beavers scored points via void at 103 and 171.
Several Hornets finished the night with unbeaten records.
Kyle Drewer at 112, Bodhi Miller at 119, Nik Andaverde at 125, Logan Hunter at 130, Wyatt Diekman at 135, Skyler Crespo at 145, Kaden Frye at 152, Wyatt Cool at 189, Mikki Feister at 215 and Emmett Bingaman at 285 all went 2-0 on the evening. Kody Drewer was 1-0 at 140 pounds. Connor Henckel finished 1-1 at 160.
White Pigeon sweeps
White Pigeon won a pair of SW10 wrestling matches on Wednesday, beating Bloomingdale 46-24 and Hartford 60-16.
Finishing the evening with 2-0 records for the Chiefs were Bruno Martinez at 112, Lincoln Strawser at 119, Evan Atherton at 130, Kyle Black at 135, Nate Weber at 140, Tyler Battles at 145, Dominic Solis at 215 and Kobie Debruine at 285.
Finishing with 1-1 records were Dakota Conley at 125 and Kaleb Elkins at 152.
Colon splits
The Colon wrestling team split a pair of matches on Wednesday.
Colon beat Howe Military 36-12.
Ryan Bower at 112, Keagan Locker at 135, Caiden Carver at 140, Ian Eels at 145 and JaPheth Troyer at 189 all won their bouts by pinfall.
Trenton Larker also won his match, by void, at 152.
The Magi dropped a 42-24 match to Lakeside Academy.
Earning wins for Colon were Bower at 112, Carver at 140 and Eels at 145 all by pinfall. Locker earned a win by void at 135.
