DeKALB – Three people, including a child, were taken to a hospital for treatment after a head-on collision near the intersection of Peace Road and Pleasant Street on Wednesday, DeKalb police said.
The crash occurred on Peace south of Pleasant, near DeKalb Taylor Municipal Airport, at 4:48 p.m., police said. Peace was closed for more than an hour between Lincoln Highway and Pleasant as police and firefighters responded to the wreck. The road reopened at 6:02 p.m., police said.
DeKalb police Sgt. Jim Haacker said a black Mustang was northbound on Peace in the right lane when the driver attempted to pass another vehicle. Haacker said the driver, a Waterman man, lost control of his vehicle as it moved into the left lane and skidded into southbound traffic. The vehicle collided head-on with a white Toyota carrying a Maple Park woman and her child.
“I would say that the slippery street was a factor,” Haacker said. "How much of a factor? We don't know yet."
First responders could be heard on emergency radio calling for a helicopter to the scene, but it later was diverted to Northwestern Medicine Kishwaukee Hospital, where all three people were taken by ambulance.
The female driver of the white Toyota was later airlifted to another hospital to be treated for more serious injuries, Haacker said.
Police had not issued any citations as of Wednesday evening.
