Up by eight with 4:22 in regulation, the Bethel College men’s basketball team missed chances to extend the lead and put the game away.

The result was a 101-96 loss to Tabor in overtime Wednesday in KCAC play at Thresher Gym.

The bright spot for the Threshers was a 40-point performance by senior guard Chase Banister. Tabor countered with 38 points from Julian Winton.

“We work on a lot of those situations a lot, and when the game was on the line, we panicked,” Bethel coach Tony Hoops said. “We missed free throws, we had turnovers. We had a lot of things that are uncharacteristic of this program. We had about a 30-second spell, where we didn’t do what we needed to do to win. If we want to take the next step as a program, it’s not enough to want to win. You have to go out and get the win. That means we have to get the rebounds that Tabor got on their offensive end. That means making free throws and getting turnovers. Tabor knows how to win and they find ways to do so.”

Banister hit 14 of 21 from the field, including eight of 12 from 3-point range. His last basket was a 3-pointer with 7:04 remaining in regulation. Banister got few touches the rest of the way, finishing two points shy of the Thresher single-game scoring record.

“I wish I could have gotten a few more late,” Banister said. “That would have helped the team. This one hurt. We had one like this a couple of years ago against them and lost a buzzer beater. They switched to a box-and-one or some sort of deny defense late. We had some people step up then. We needed more stops on defense. (Winton) had a great game for them.”

“Chase was special tonight,” Hoops said. “A lot of those came in transition or in the open court. He battled.”

DeShun Patterson scored 14 points for Tabor, followed by Diontre Cutliff with 13, Alan Urrutia with 12 and Gaven Schumann with 11. Tabor improves to 10-11, 9-6 in KCAC play. The Bluejays are in a five-way tie for third in the conference.

Poe Bryant scored 14 points with 13 rebounds. Terrell Marshall scored 14 points and Dakota Foster added 13.

Tabor jumped out by nine early. Bethel replied with a run of its own. A Banister layup put Bethel up by 11 with 2:16 left the half. Tabor came back with an 8-0 run to end the half and trail 44-41.

Bethel led by as many as five early in the second half. Tabor led by as many as three. A Banister trey with just under seven minutes to play put the Threshers up by eight. Tabor came back, tying the game on back-to-back Winton layups off steals with 1:08 to play. Winton missed a free throw after his second score. Marshall put Bethel back in the lead with 37.8 seconds left on a fadeaway jumper from 12-feet out. Cutliff tied the game with a layup with 27 seconds to play. A Bethel shot at the buzzer rimmed out.

Tabor opened the overtime with one of two Gaven Schumann free throws. Marshall then hit two for Bethel. Tabor led by three on a pair of Winton free throws with 2:07 left. Rushing and Bryant fouled out in quick succession. Winton put Tabor up by five with a layup with 1:34 to play. A Schumann layup at the shot clock buzzer kept Tabor up by five with 8.7 seconds left. Foster answered with a layup five seconds later. Urrutia put the game away with two free throws with 2.8 seconds in overtime.

Bethel falls to 6-16, 4-11 in KCAC play, and plays at 7 p.m. Saturday in Salina against Kansas Wesleyan. The Coyotes are 11-10, 9-6 in KCAC play and also tied for third place. KWU stopped Saint Mary 80-64 Wednesday.

“That will be another tough place to play,” Hoops said. “We’re going to have to be ready to battle. We’re going to use this game to learn from and go forward.”

“We’re not giving up on the season,” Banister said. “The conference is still wide open and we still have a shot to make the playoffs.”
