The vehicle was traveling in the San Pedro Necta municipality in a mountainous part of western Guatemala when the accident occurred, a spokesman for fire services said.

It was not immediately clear what caused the minibus to careen off the road, the spokesman said.

Volunteer firefighters said the the vehicle went beyond the curve of the road that caused the driver to lose control and overturn.

It is understood heavy rain made the roads more treacherous in recent days.

Walter Gomez, head of the rescue patrol, said the victims are still on their way to the hospital, which is almost two hours away.

Family members reportedly took some of the bodies of the dead, since the nearest officials are some five hours away from the crash site.

Meanwhile in the UK, two vehicles smashed into each other on the M58 destroying one car and completely ripping off its roof.

Two women were rushed to hospital , one with serious injuries.
