Man dead after altercation in front of sheriff's office

A man is dead following an altercation in front of the Etowah County Sheriff’s Office, Sheriff Todd Entrekin said Wednesday night, and Oxford Police Department investigators were en route to handle the case.

Entrekin said his office had complaints about a man outside the sheriff’s office harassing people. An investigator went outside, and the man and several deputies became involved in an altercation.

“They tased him,” Entrekin said. Medics were called to the scene, he said, and treated the man, who was taken to Gadsden Regional Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

Entrekin, on his way back from a sheriff’s conference, had no further details about the incident.
