Popular Sarasota destination for Chinese food cited for multiple 'high priority violations'
For the past five years Yummy House has been a popular Sarasota destination on the North Trail for Chinese food.
On Tuesday, though, the Florida Department of Business & Professional Regulation shut down the restaurant at 3232 Tamiami Trail following a routine inspection for three "high priority violations," seven "intermediate violations" and 15 "intermediate violations."
Yummy House remained closed Wednesday and no one answered a phone call made to the restaurant's 941-351-1688 number. The department website, on Wednesday, listed Yummy House as "temporarily closed" with "operations ordered stopped until violations are corrected."
Here are the high priority violations:
1. "All potentially hazardous (time/temperature control for safety) foods in reach-in cooler cold held at greater than 41 degrees Fahrenheit. All food on main kitchen reach in cooler above 41°F. Establishment states products were prepared earlier in morning. Ambient 46°F. All product iced down and some times moved to other working coolers." Corrective action was taken resulting in a warning.
2. "Employee failed to wash hands before changing gloves and/or putting on gloves to work with food. Multiple employees. Advised on proper hand wash protocols." This resulted in a warning.
3. "Roach activity present as evidenced by live roaches found. Observed one live roaches on wall behind kitchen reach in cooler. Observed 2 live roaches under prep cooler on cook line. Observed one live roach under hand wash sink on back prep line. Observed 9 live roaches under bar/wait station. Observed 2 live roaches on wall behind cooler near rice containers." This resulted in a warning.
The department cites violations of Florida's sanitation and safety laws based on the standards of U.S. Food and Drug Administration's Food Code. High priority violations are those that could contribute directly to a food-borne illness or injury and include items such as cooking, reheating, cooling and hand-washing. Intermediate violations are those which, if not addressed, could lead to risk factors that contribute to food-borne illness or injury. Basic violations are those considered best practices to implement.
