MANCHESTER — Arie Breakfield hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer and the Spaulding High School boys basketball team stunned Manchester Central on the road, 48-47, in Division I.
The Red Raiders (2-6) trailed 47-45 with 2.5 seconds to go and had to go the length of the court to tie or win the game. Breakfield caught the inbounds pass just on the Spaulding side of halfcourt, took three dribbles to the right wing and shot over two Central defenders, draining the shot at the buzzer for the win.
Isaiah Rose was the only Red Raider in double figures with 21 points. Breakfield had a rough night until he hit the 3, ending with seven points.
Spaulding, who ended a three-game losing streak, hosts rival Dover in a pivotal game Friday. Central is 5-2.
BOYS BASKETBALL
Oyster River 49, Pembroke 47
PEMBROKE — The Bobcats grinded out a big Division II win on the road to improve to 7-1.
OR trailed 36-35 going into the fourth quarter, but turned up the D to pull oput the win, outscoring the Spartans, 14-11.
Kyle Landrigan led the Bobcats with 14 points, while Max Lewis added 13 and Cam Thibodeau tossed in 10.
Oyster River hosts Timberlane Tuesday. Pembroke is 4-3.
St. Thomas 68, Raymond 30
DOVER — The Saints improved to 4-5 in Division III with Tuesday's win at home.
Shawn DeKorne led STA with 22 points, while Andrew Cavanaugh added 18 points and Diego Garcia tossed in nine.
St. Thomas visits Laconia Friday.
Souhegan 69, Coe-Brown 57
AMHERST — The Bears finally had to foul late in the fourth quarter and the Sabers pulled away to win the D-II battle.
Coe-Brown (5-3) trailed by three at the half and four after three.
Kyshaun Rowell paced the C-B attack with 21 points and four assists, while Scott Spenard added 12 points, Luke McCusker had 11 and Brendan Eaton scored six and pulled down eight boards.
The Bears play at Windham Tuesday. Souhegan is 5-4.
Lake Region 69, Traip 33
NAPLES, Maine — It was all Lakers in the second half, as Traip managed just 10 points. It was a 32-23 game at halftime.
Charlie Driscoll led the Rangers (6-8) with 15 points. Lake Region improved to 7-6.
Traip will host Seacoast Christian on Monday.
Portsmouth 57, Trinity 40
PORTSMOUTH — The Clippers bounced back from Friday's D-I loss at Bedford to bat winless Trinity on Wednesday.
Alex Tavares led Portsmouth (6-2) with 23 points, while Mike Sanborn added 14. The Clippers led 27-16 at the half.
The Clippers host Bishop Guertin on Tuesday.
GIRLS BASKETBALL
St. Thomas 58, Raymond 38
DOVER — Maggie Marsh scored a game-high 26 points to pace the Saints to the D-III win at home Tuesday.
STA (8-3) led 29-19 at half. Lindsay Towle, Madi Freese and Morgan Atwell added eight points apiece.
The Saints host Sanborn (9-2) in a pivotal D-III game Thursday.
Manchester Central 52, Spaulding 29
ROCHESTER — The Raiders dropped their fifth game in a row to fall to 2-6 in Division I.
Phoebe Downer and Mary Paradis led Spaulding with eight points apiece, while Abby Ward and Shea Gitau tossed in six each.
The Red Raiders play at rival Dover Friday. Central is 6-3.
Coe-Brown 76, Plymouth 34
NORTHWOOD — The Bears broke open a close game with a 28-9 run in the second quarter to secure the Division II win.
Ahna McCusker led the way with 17 points and 13 rebounds, while Val White added 17 points and Mary Thoms had nine.
Coe-Brown (5-6) hosts Timberlane on Feb. 2.
Pinkerton 56, Dover 24
DERRY — The Green Wave lost for the fourth time in five games to fall to 3-7 in Division I.
Dover hosts rival Spaulding Friday in a pivotal game for both teams. Pinkerton is 6-1.
Portsmouth 64, Kingswood 27
PORTSMOUTH — Ava Karlin's 10 points off the bench led 13 different Clippers in the scoring column, and the Portsmouth High School girls basketball team rode a strong second half to Wednesday’s win over Kingswood.
The Clippers stayed undefeated atop Division II at 8-0. Arianna Hebert had nine points for PHS, while Abbe Laurence and Skylar Whitten added eight apiece. Hannah Taylor chipped in with seven and Sadie Shore had five.
The Knights dropped to 4-5. Portsmouth returns to action tonight at Oyster River (0-7) for a 6:30 tip-off in Durham.
BOYS HOCKEY
Somersworth/Coe-Brown 6, Laconia/Winnisquam 0
LACONIA — Gage Gagne had three goals and three assists to lead the Bearcats to the Division III road win.
Cam Frank added two goals and three assists, while Connor Cossette had a goal and three assists. Cal Welch and Griffen McHugh combined to earn the shutout in goal.
The Bearcats (5-4) visit Pembroke/Campbell Friday night.
Dover 3, Timberlane 0
SALEM — The Green Wave improved to 7-3-1 with Wednesday's D-II win at the Salem Icenter.
Dover hosts Merrimack on Saturday. Timberlane fell to 0-6.
Goffstown 6, St. Thomas 3
GOFFSTOWN — In a Division II showdown at Saint Anselm College, Goffstown got the better of STA.
The Saints (8-2), who lost their second straight game, play at UNH vs. Oyster River on Feb. 1. Goffstown is 9-1.
Portsmouth/Newmarket 3, Alvirne 2
HUDSON — Ryan Kane had a goal and assist, and the Clipper Mules held on after building a 3-0 lead in the second period. Portsmouth/Newmarket improved to 3-6 while Alvirne dropped to 2-7.
David Blodgett also scored a goal. Hank Martin (assist) posted his first varsity point. David Lefan and Fred Holmes each tacked on assists.
The Clipper Mules host Oyster River on Friday night (8:30 p.m.) in Dover.
