Need for publicizing the services offered

SHANGHAI needs to make its government services and policies more familiar to its citizens, Vice Mayor Zhou Bo said yesterday.

The city wants both citizens and small and medium enterprises to be more aware of what the government can do. More government services will become accessible through both online and offline channels, Zhou said.

Some companies, for example, are not fully aware of government policies regarding talent introduction and supportive measures for small and medium businesses, he noted.

The city will carry out trial programs to support bringing in highly skilled personnel, or talent, from overseas as well as from neighboring provinces.

Ma Yimin, general manager of the Shanghai branch of China Telecom, urged the setting up of a unified service platform that links different government agencies and departments to provide better accessibility for information and services.

“Although a lot of government agencies launched mobile applications, they don’t have technical staff to maintain the operations of these apps so that some of the basic service information is still lacking and hard to access for ordinary citizens and business owners,” he said.

Ma was speaking at a panel discussion during the annual session of the Shanghai Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference.

Other members of the political advisory body also called for fair treatment and equal access between state-owned and private businesses, especially in the financial sector.

Meanwhile, the conference was told that a standardized data platform that integrates different government departments’ data resources to build Shanghai into a model city is under way.
