The defence lawyer for Huji leader Moulana Yahiya yesterday concluded closing arguments and sought acquittal of his client in cases filed over the August 21 grenade attack on an Awami League rally in 2004.
Defence lawyer Moinuddin Miah argued for an hour, saying the prosecution completely failed to prove the charges against his client with the statements of 225 prosecution witnesses.
After yesterday's arguments, Judge Shahed Nuruddin of the Speedy Trial Tribunal-1 of Dhaka adjourned the hearing till January 29.
The lawyer argued that Huji leader Mufti Abdul Hannan implicated his client while giving his confessional statement before a magistrate. But none of the witnesses who gave statements mentioned his client's name.
He also placed different rulings of the higher courts where it was said an accused was not convicted on the basis of the confessional statement of a co-accused.
Meanwhile, defence lawyers for 16 other accused including former BNP lawmaker Kazi Shah Mofazzal Hossain Kaikobad also completed their closing arguments and sought acquittal of their clients.
