Three sisters will be the first local girls to start the process of joining Cub Scouts. The Buffalo Trail Council CEO on Wednesday said he expects to schedule interviews within the next few days.
“I’m very excited about it,” David Chapman said. “I think it’s going to be a great opportunity for us to serve the whole family of all of our Scouts.”
The anticipated interviews come after the Boy Scouts of America board of directors in October approved welcoming girls as Cub Scouts. The announcement also revealed a program could be available in 2019 allowing older girls to enter the path toward the Eagle Scout rank.
Chapman said scouting teaches leadership training and character development, skills that apply to boys and girls.
Locally, the Buffalo Trail Council’s chartered partners — such as churches and service clubs — have the option to serve girls. Chapman said the council has chosen three of the partners to be a part of a pilot before expanding enrollment for girls in the fall.
“They’ll be sponsored by the same organization typically, like we do now,” Chapman said. “They’ll just have a separate program for girls. We don’t really anticipate a lot of changes to the program. It’ll just be separate dens or separate packs for girls.”
Chapman said the organization recognizes the value of same-gender education and that girls have participated in programs for years. In addition to the sibling interviews, the council is planning an upcoming rally for recruitment.
