US court drops case against Bangladeshi diplomat

A US court has dismissed all felony charges against Deputy Consul General at the Consulate General of Bangladesh in New York Md Shahedul Islam.

The case is now over and Shahedul is free to travel, Consul General in New York Md Shameem Ahsan told the news agency yesterday. His diplomatic passport has been returned by the court, Shameem said. This follows the case filed by Ruhul Amin, former domestic aide of the diplomat.

The verdict came seven months after he was indicted in the case, in June last year, on charges that he had forced a foreign servant to work for his family in Queens without pay and assaulted him on several occasions.

On the same day, Shahedul, who had limited diplomatic immunity, was ordered to surrender his passport when he appeared before the Queens Supreme Court.
