Arsenal are closing in on the deal for the Gabon ace after holding talks with Borussia Dortmund.

Arsene Wenger is keen to add to his squad this month after a disappointing start to the season.

Arsenal sit sixth, five points outside the top four, and were dumped out of the FA Cup in the third round by Championship side Nottingham Forrest.

They play the League Cup semi-final second leg against Chelsea tonight with the score locked at 0-0 and are into the knock out rounds of the Europa League.

But the Aubameyang deal could spark life into their campaign after losing Alexis Sanchez to Manchester United this week.

And Honigstein thinks he the perfect player for Arsenal’s slick passing system.

“It’s a really interesting move on so many levels,” he told the BBC’s Euro Leagues Podcast.

“I’m a huge fan of Aubameyang. I think he’s going to score a lot of goals.

“The way Arsenal play on the floor with quick passes - that’s exactly his game.

“You wouldn’t want to play him as a centre-forward in a more direct team, I don’t think he’d do a good job for Chelsea.

“I think he’d be completely miscast in that role.”

But he does think he’s a similar player to record signing Alexandre Lacazette, and questions why Arsene Wenger didn’t sign him in the summer.

“But why did they go and get Lacazette (in the summer)?” he added.

“It was clear all over Europe that Aubameyang was on the table, Dortmund were waiting for an offer to come in, he was waiting for an offer to come in.

“And they decided that Lacazette for half the money was the better option and now they are replacing him with very much the same player.

“Perhaps a better player, more mature, further ahead in his development.

“But aren’t there other areas in the squad they should have upgraded first?”
