Police: While in car with undercover detective, Brockton woman made drug deals

When the undercover trooper asked the woman if she could get him drugs, she got into his cruiser and directed him to a mini mart, where police say she conducted two deals.

BROCKTON – A woman who was sitting in a car with an undercover detective told him she could get him drugs, then made two deals in front of him Monday afternoon, police said.

Detectives assigned to the state police Gang Unit were conducting patrols in the city when an undercover trooper approached a woman looking to purchase drugs.

“The undercover asked her if she was able to get a ‘40,’ common street code for narcotics, signifying $40,” said Trooper Paul Sullivan, a spokesman for state police. “She said she could.”

The woman, later identified by police as Samantha Bates, then got into the undercover cruiser and directed the trooper to Brockton Mini Mart, at 139 Pleasant St.

The woman asked the undercover detective to front the money for the drugs and he gave her $20, Sullivan said.

“Bates walked over to a male standing in front of the store,” he said. “After a brief conversation, they made a hand-to-hand transaction and she walked back to the undercover.”

The man who handed the woman the drugs was later identified by police as Jamie Douglas White.

“The undercover then asked Bates if she could get two more bags for another $40,” Sullivan said. “She walked back and made another exchange.”

The woman handed the undercover detective three bags total containing suspected crack cocaine, Sullivan said. Bates then asked the detective for $20 as a reward for helping to get him drugs, he said.

Other detectives who were in the area were alerted to move in and arrest Bates as she exited the cruiser. The man was also taken into custody.

The detectives found the money on White that Bates gave him in exchange for the drugs and found the $20 bill the detective gave Bates for her efforts, Sullivan said.

Bates, 25, of 80 Errol Road, Brockton, was arrested and charged with distributing a Class B drug and conspiracy to violate the drug law.

White, 39, of 9 Loucraft Ave., Apt. 1, Brockton, was arrested and charged with a subsequent offense of distributing cocaine and conspiracy to violate the drug law.

They were both expected to be arraigned Tuesday in Brockton District Court, but the results weren’t immediately available.
