Tuesday sports roundup: MCC withstands Fulda's boys basketball bombers

The Fulda Raiders boys basketball team, which drained 19 3-point shots Friday in a 93-59 victory over Edgerton, couldn’t get the job done Tuesday in a 68-53 loss to Red Rock Conference foe Murray County Central.

The Rebels held Fulda to nine 3-point makes and, perhaps more importantly, pushed the basketball inside repeatedly for scores.

Tyler Groves led the way with 18 points. Nate Everson and Spencer Wajer both added 13 points as the Rebels led 34-21 at the half and maintained control in the second half.

The win upped MCC to 9-5 overall and evened Fulda’s record at 7-7.

“They were able to drive to the basket and get it to their post players,” said Fulda head coach Andrew Oakland.

MCC “really got after us” in the half-court, Oakland confessed. “Their pressure got us to take bad shots, as well.”

Dalton Slinger with 19 points led the Raiders. Matthias Kunerth had 16 points and 10 rebounds, and Cory Renneke scored 11 points.

Oakland said the Raiders have averaged about 35 3-point attempts per game this year, but on Tuesday only about four of their long-range attempts were open shots. MCC got a hand in the face on most occasions.

“I would like to be in the double-digits with 3-pointers. Nine’s a good number but it’s kind of low for us,” Oakland said.

EDGERTON -- Southwest Christian beat Edgerton handidily, in the intown rivalry, by scoring 51 points in the first half. The Eagles leading scorers were Parker Kooima (12), Trey Huisken (11), Logan Walhof (11) and 5 assists, Avery Pater (9) and 8 assists, and AJ Vanderby (9).

The Flying Dutchman were led by Trey Gilbertson who finished with a double-double. Gilbertson scored a game high 18 points, and pulled down 11 rebounds, and had 3 blocks. Brayden Kuiper added 9 points.

SWC improves to (13-2, 9-0) and plays its next game on Friday against Mountain Lake Area.

LAMBERTON -- Westbrook-Walnut Grove started the game red hot with a 15-1 run. Red Rock Central was unable to claw its way back, as W-WG maintained a 10 point cushion throughout the game. The Chargers top scorers were Parker Freeburg who had 19, Anthony Ross who had 13, Matt DePrez with 13, and Andrew Quade with 11.

The Falcons top scorer was Sam Hansen who finished with 11 points. Brady Rasmussen added 5 points, and 9 rebounds.

RRC falls to (11-4, 6-3) and plays it’s next game in Lamberton against Adrian, while W-WG improves to (13-3, 7-1).

PIPESTONE -- Pipestone edges out Luverne 52-48 after trailing most of the second half. The Arrows top scorers were Cole Zephier with 16, Tyl Woelber with 15, Carter Colemer with 9, and Braeden Rieck with 9. Luverne had a trio of players finish with double digits as Derek Lundgren scored 12, Mark Robinson scored 11, and Cole Claussen scored 10.

A key difference between the two teams was free throw shooting as Pipestone connected on 15 of its 21 attempts, while Luverne only made 3 of its 10 attempts.

Pipestone’s next game is this friday in Pipestone against the Worthington Trojans. The two teams met once already this year with Pipestone winning 57-39.

GIRLS BASKETBALLWorthington 66, Austin 53

AUSTIN -- Continuing their bid to toughen up against good non-area teams and get a good seeding for the Section 2AAA tournament, the Worthington Trojans secured a satisfying win against Class AAA Austin.

Nyamer Diew enjoyed a very strong game, scoring 29 points on three 3-point shots, eight 2-pointers and 4-of-4 free throw shooting. Emma Thuringer scored 15 points and Payton Sauerbrei had nine.

Diew also had 12 rebounds, six assists, six steals and three blocks.

Abby Lewis and Hope Dudycha scored 22 and 12 points, respectively, for Austin.

Austin played zone defense throughout, but the Trojans handled it well. The visitors also made good defensive stops down the stretch. The Packers pressed, but WHS wasn’t bothered by it, said head coach Eric Lindner.

Worthington also took care of business offensively in the late-going, said the coach.

“The game was always in focus, and we were always able to keep connecting (on shots),” Lindner said.

Madisyn Huisman and Sophie Wietzema had six rebounds each for Worthington. Wietzema and Thuringer each had four assists.

The win pushes WHS to 9-7 while dropping Austin to 8-7.

HILLS -- Host Hills-Beaver Creek scored all the points it needed in the first half, moving out to a 39-14 lead at intermission, in a smooth win over Westbrook-Walnut Grove.

Grace Bundesen scored 17 points and Sidney Fick totaled 16.

Alli VandeKieft and Brittany Erickson both had six points for W-WG.

SIBLEY, Iowa -- Erika Pottebaum grabbed 12 rebounds and scored 18 points to lead Boyden-Hull to victory over Sibley-Ocheyedan.

Mallory Nilles scored 14 points and Brianna Kleinwolterink had 11 for the winners. Brooke Zylstra added nine points and nine rebounds, with two blocks.

Kelli Greenfield scored 11 points for Sibley-Ocheyedan. Megan Grimes had nine.

WRESTLINGW/RRC Triangular

WABASSO -- Host Wabasso/Red Rock Central squeezed past Dawson-Boyd 36-34 as 220-pounder Isaac Schmiesing clinched it with a 7-4 win over Tanner Johnson.

The hosts got three falls: Josh Hesse pinned Keaton Haas in 6:17 at 138 pounds, Calvin Anderson pinned Austin Mattocks in 2:20 at 152, and Lance Wagner pinned Slade Irvine in 1:31 at 170.
