Laker defense shuts down Cardinals

Defensively, Detroit Lakes set out to shut down the Cardinals’ leading scorer Claire Wolhowe and did just that holding the Cardinal senior to seven points, all from the free throw line.

“Our team’s defensive goal was the hold Wolhowe to single digits,” said Laker head coach Tom Vagle. “She never got a field goal. Cortney Brodsho, Haidyn Gunderson and Anna Cihak did a great job of defending.”

Bre Price, Lauryn Manning and Lauren Tschider led the offensive attack.

“It was nice to have three players in double digits,” Vagle said.

Price scored a game-high 17. Manning and Tschider added 16 and 12, respectively.

The game was close in the early going with DL leading 14-12 with less than five minutes until halftime. The Lakers closed the half on a 14-6 run to head to the break up by 10 points 28-18.

Manning completed a 13-7 run to start the second half with back-to-back buckets and DL led comfortably 41-24.

The Lakers recorded their first conference victory (1-4) and improved to 2-13 overall. The Cardinal dropped to 1-13 and 0-7 in Mid-State play.

DL hosts Thief River Falls (11-8) Thursday, Jan. 25. The Prowlers were defeated on the road Tuesday night 54-51 by Ada-Borup/Norman County West.
