They were creating awareness among students against love jihad

The police have registered a case against the leaders of the district units of the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP), the Bajrang Dal and the Durga Vahini for holding a programme in a public place without permission from the authorities here on January 22.

According to the police, when the Assistant Sub-Inspector of Police was on his rounds on January 22, he noticed that there was a group of people near the MGM College Bus Stand. When he enquired with them, he was told that they were holding a signature campaign to create awareness for students against love jihad.

When they were questioned if they had taken permission for the programme, the organisers replied in the negative. They were distributing pamphlets among the students. They had not taken permission from either the district administration or any other authority for this programme.

The programme organised on Udupi-Manipal National Highway 169A also affected the flow of traffic on the road from 12.15 p.m. to 1.15 p.m. on that day.

A case has been registered in the Udupi Town Police Station against the leaders of these organisations under Sections 143, 290 read with 149 of the Indian Penal Code, the police said.
