FORT MILL, S.C. -- Police tell NBC Charlotte a woman was shot and killed at a market in York County Tuesday evening.

According to Fort Mill police, the shots were fired at The Peach Stand in the 1300 block of S.C. 160 in Fort Mill a little before 4:45 p.m.

Jack Davenport was inside the store. He couldn't believe his ears.

"My wife and I froze looked at each other like, 'Are we really hearing this?'" said Davenport. "I pushed my wife towards the door said, 'Let's get out of here.'"

Upon arrival, officers located a woman with an apparent gunshot wound. She was pronounced dead at the scene, police say.

"It's an extremely unusual occurrence here. This has been a mainstay, somewhat of a landmark in this community for quite some time, and it's frequented by a lot of people on a daily basis," said Fort Mill PD spokesperson Bryan Zachary.

Police said a suspect involved in the deadly shooting was taken into custody.

"He basically positioned himself in the store, was basically waiting on police to arrive," said Zachary.

Officials have not released the male suspect and the victim's identities. According to witnesses, the suspect and the victim knew each other.

"All of us at the Peach Stand are shocked and heartbroken over this senseless act of violence, and our thoughts are with the victim's family and everyone affected. We are working closely with authorities to assist in their investigation, and ask that you please contact Fort Mill Police for information," said Ron Edwards, general manager of The Peach Stand.
