Former White House national security adviser Michael Flynn secretly met with FBI officials, including Peter Strzok, at his West Wing office unbeknownst to President Trump or other senior administration officials, exactly a year ago today.
The Jan. 24, 2017, meeting was part of the FBI's investigation into his communications with Russia's ambassador and was the event in which Flynn was later charged for lying to the FBI.
The FBI had reached out to Flynn earlier that day to set up the short-notice meeting. He also did not bring his White House lawyer or personal attorney to the meeting.
"Apparently it was not clear to Flynn that this was about his personal conduct," one White House official told NBC. "So he didn't think of bringing his own lawyer."
Flynn did not tell Trump about the meeting and the president only learned of it two days later from former acting attorney general Sally Yates.
White House counsel Don McGhan found out about the meeting from Yates when she told him Flynn had lied to Vice President Mike Pence about his communications with Sergey Kislyak, which ultimately ended up costing Flynn his job.
Flynn was removed from his job Feb. 13 after just 24 days in the White House.
