It's not clear when exactly the nomination is expected, though it is expected to come soon, Politico reported.
Rettig, a lawyer at Beverly Hills-based law firm Hochman, Salkin, Rettig, Toscher & Perez PC, specializes in tax controversy and has represented before the IRS, the Justice Department's tax division and numerous state taxing authorities.
He previously served as the chair of the IRS Advisory Council, which advises the IRS on tax administration issues and reviews existing tax policy.
The IRS is currently being helmed by David Kautter, who has served as the agency's acting director since November.
