The Latest on a fatal car-train collision (all times local):

8:10 a.m.

A Gilbert Police Department spokesman says a car drove into the side of a moving freight train at a gated crossing, killing the car's driver when the vehicle flipped and caught fire.

Sgt. Darrell Krueger says the crossing's gates were down and the lights flashing and that there's no immediate indication whether the car's driver was impaired or asleep before the crash early Wednesday morning.

Krueger says the dead driver hasn't been identified and that nobody else was injured. He says the train was struck near the tail end.

The crash occurred at a railroad crossing on Val Vista Drive between Ray and Warner road.

Authorities in the Phoenix suburb of Gilbert say one person is dead after being trapped in a car on fire following a collision with a moving train at a crossing.

The car overturned and caught fire after the wreck early Wednesday morning

Twitter posts by Gilbert police and fire agencies did not provide additional information on circumstances on the collision, and police and Union Pacific Corp. spokesmen did not immediately respond to emailed requests for additional information.

The Union Pacific is a freight railroad whose branch line serving Phoenix passes through Gilbert.
