DUBAI: Dubai Police rescued an Asian sailor crying out for help after high tides swept his vessel from the dockyard, officers revealed on Jan.23.
At around 9.27am on Jan.21, tides swung the vessel at the Dubai Creek causing it to break off from its anchorage and sweeping it one mile deep into the sea before relentlessly slamming it against breakwaters.
The sailor cried out for help and feared the vessel was almost breaking up. He tried to jump off and swim for his life, said the Director of Maritime Rescue Department at Dubai Police Lt. Col. Ali Abdullah Al Qaseeb Al Naqbi.
The Dubai Maritime Rescue Teams, in cooperation with the Ports Police Station, upon receipt of an alert from the Dubai Police Operations Room responded to the sailor’s distress request.
They rushed in maritime security and maritime rescue boats to the scene at a rocky seafront opposite the entrance to the Dubai Creek and found the fear-stricken sailor about to jump into the sea.
The tides were so strong and the vessel was drifting and bumping against the breakwaters. The rescue teams initially worked on calming him for fear he would risk his life in case he jumped into the sea.
They daringly approached the vessel and meticulously helped him out of it despite the high waves and the vessel’s instability.
They transferred him to the rescue teams’ boat safely.
The procedures were directed by Major General Engineer Mohammed Saif Al Zafeen, Dubai Police’s Assistant Commander-in-Chief for Operations. Al-Naqbi urged sea users for vigilance.
