Colorado Springs police have arrested a convict forbidden from carrying a gun after he allegedly shot and seriously injured a toddler in an adjoining apartment late Tuesday night.
Jair Isaza, 26, has been arrested for investigation of shooting the child and illegal possession of a firearm, said Lt. Howard Black, spokesman for the Colorado Springs Police Department.
The child was struck in the leg. The name of the child has not been released.
"The child is in serious but non life-threatening condition," Black said.
Police were called to an apartment on the 1100 block of Bell Tower Height at 10:22 p.m., Black said.
Officers found a child suffering from a bullet wound, he said. Isaza had allegedly fired a gun in an adjoining apartment. The bullet traveled through a wall and hit the child, Black said.
Police are investigating the circumstances that led to the shooting, Black said.
"Obviously this is an unfortunate event," he said. "People should take due care when they are handling a loaded gun."
Black emphasized that it has not been determined that the shooting was accidental, Black said.
