The fire started in the chimney of a Commerical Street home. The chimney had never been cleaned before, Whitman firefighters said.
WHITMAN – A Whitman homeowner may have started a fire in their fireplace Tuesday afternoon, but it didn’t stay there very long.
Shortly after a Commercial Street resident added wood to the home’s fireplace, flames began erupting from the top of the chimney, which had never been cleaned before.
Whitman firefighters responded to 21 Commercial St. around 4:45 p.m. Upon arrival, they saw flames shooting out the chimney.
Two engines and a ladder responded to the scene, along with Chief Timothy Grenno.
Firefighters extended a ladder to the roof and quickly extinguished the blaze.
The fire was contained to the chimney and the home was checked to make sure no flames had gone into the walls.
All of the residents made it out of the home safely and no one was injured during the incident. The residents were not displaced as a result of the fire
The home sustained smoke damage and the chimney will need to be inspected prior to any future use.
“Chief Grenno would like to remind residents to have their chimneys cleaned and inspected once a year to avoid incidents like today's fire,” the department’s press release read.
