Sir — This refers to the editorial, “Ministry of loneliness” (January 22). It is interesting to note that the British Government has appointed its first ever Minister for loneliness. While there are many who would say, ‘leave me alone’, even those who utter this out of extreme distress, would never want to live a lonely life. Like it is said, an idle mind is a devil’s workshop, loneliness prompts one to think unnecessary things, drives into madness and take extreme action.
Loneliness allows ‘feelings’ to accumulate and if one does not give vent to such pent-up feelings, through interaction with others, it leads to dangerous situations. Diversion of the mind is the need of the hour and this can be achieved only through mingling with others.
Loneliness haunts not just elders but also young ones. As this move is the first of its kind, the world will be watching with eagerness how the UK Minister performs her responsibility. But one needs to commend the British Government for preparing the ground to tackle loneliness.
