He and eight others were chasing armed robbers

A Delhi Police Sub-Inspector was shot at while chasing armed robbers in west Delhi’s Cantonment area on Tuesday.

Car robbery

Deputy Commissioner of Police (West) Vijay Kumar said Sub-Inspector Naveen (40) was shot in the right thigh when the assailants opened fire at a team after they were asked to stop by the police at Ring Road near Army Medical College.

Mr. Naveen and eight others were investigating a car robbery that had taken place in Dwarka Sector 23 on January 18.

Car owner Navneet Shauken told the police that the incident happened while he was sitting in the car near the community centre. Three men allegedly threatened to shoot him if he did not get down from the car. Mr. Shauken said they drove towards Pochanpur village.

The police received a tip-off regarding armed men travelling in a car in the area. Suspecting they were the car robbers, the police team asked them to stop.

Accused escape

“However, the car occupants opened fire and the constable was shot in the thigh. The police fired back but the accused managed to flee,” Mr. Kumar said.

Mr. Naveen is undergoing treatment and a case has been filed at Narayana police station, he said.
